"아, 초복이구나." 맞다. 2025년 초복은 7월 20일. 그런데 우리는 왜 하필 이 날을 '복날'이라고 부를까? 단순히 "더우니까 보양식 먹자"는 문화로만 알고 있는 사람이 많다. 하지만 그 안에는 수천 년 동아시아 문명이 체득한 건강 관리의 지혜가 숨어 있다. 삼복은 절기가 아니다. 이게 첫 번째 충격이다. 24절기 중 하지와 입추 사이에 위치하지만, 정작 절기 목록에는 없다. 대신 '간지(干支)'로 날짜를 정한다. 하지 이후 세 번째 경일(庚日)이 초복, 네 번째가 중복, 입추 이후 첫 번째 경일이 말복이다. 여기서 '경(庚)'은 천간의 일곱 번째로, 오행 중 '금(金)'에 속한다. 동양 철학에서 금은 가을을 상징한다. 그러니까 복날은 '여름 한가운데에 가을의 기운이 숨어드는 날'이라는 뜻이다. 재미있는 건 서양에도 비슷한 개념이 있다는 점이다.
